double wedding ring quilt pattern

A double wedding ring quilt pattern can create a family heirloom

This double wedding ring patter was first published in 1928 in Topeka, Kansas. The pattern consists of interlocking rings in a pattern of the material. It is know that the Roman’s in the fourth century used the double wedding ring symbols in their cups. The Gimmal Ring came about sometime in the fifteenth and 16th centuries and is Germanic in origin. This pattern showed up in the late 17th century in Pennsylvania.

This double wedding ring pattern quilt shows up in a Civil War legend. A young man and woman become engaged and he goes off to the war. Years go by as the soldier recovers from being seriously injured. When he at last is released from the hospital and returns home, he learns his beloved was still waiting for him- she had never married or given up on him. The couple didn’t have much and couldn’t afford rings. The grandmother of the bride called her granddaughter to her and handed her, her most favorite quilt with the double rings. She told her granddaughter “We will call it the double rings.”

The double wedding ring quilt also showed up also during the Depression and was very popular. It is suspected the reason for this is because these quilts could be made with scraps. While these quilts can be made with a variety of materials, the colors are contrasting colors so the pattern is readily noticed.
