Wedding Ring Finger

The Wedding Ring Finger is by tradition the third finger on the left hand

Through the ages various cultures have believed that a vein in the third finger (not counting the thumb) of the left hands goes from the finger directly to the heart. Although more modern study of the human body disproves this theory, the tradition continues. Just a note the wedding ring finger is also considered the fourth finger on the left hand. It depends on whether you include the thumb in the counting of fingers.

Prior to the marriage the wedding ring finger is adorned with an engagement ring. In some cultures the tradition is that the engagement ring is actually worn on the right hand till after the marriage because it considered bad luck to have any ring on that finger before the ceremony.
Other wedding traditions include the bride standing on the left of her husband. This tradition is said to have developed from ancient times when a man would shelter his wife with his left arm while his right hand wielded the sword to protect her. Sounds kind of gallant doesn’t it?

While planning your wedding and deciding on music, where it will be held, what kind of dress and where your reception will be consider traditions. There are rather unique traditions that come out of almost every culture that is in existence. Check those from your own heritage and that of your spouse. It could make an unforgettable memory. Most of you will retain the tradition of the wedding ring finger being the third finger of the left hand, I suggest you find other traditions to make your day special. You can create your own as well and renew them on your anniversaries.
