A wedding ring quilt is a wonderful gift

Wedding ring quilts particularly with the double wedding ring patter is a very special gift for the bride and groom. The pattern was first published in 1928 in Topeka, Kansas. The pattern consists of interlocking rings in a pattern of the material. It is know that the Roman’s in the fourth century used the double wedding ring symbols in their cups. The Gimmal Ring came about sometime in the fifteenth and 16th centuries and is Germanic in origin. This pattern showed up in the late 17th century in Pennsylvania.

This double wedding ring pattern quilt shows up in a Civil War legend. A young man and woman become engaged and he goes off to the war. Years go by as the soldier recovers from being seriously injured. When he at last is released from the hospital and returns home, he learns his beloved was still waiting for him- she had never married or given up on him. The couple didn’t have much and couldn’t afford rings. The grandmother of the bride called her granddaughter to her and handed her, her most favorite quilt with the double rings. She told her granddaughter “We will call it the double rings, it‘s my gift.”

Wedding Ring Quilts are a great way of celebrating the couple. Fabric from a christening gown, an old pair of jeans, or a favorite dress of the brides can be used in some of the squares. You can get photos of the couple as they grew up silk screened on to fabric and used to make squares for the quilt. You can family and friends to write messages on material in indelible ink or fabric paint and use those squares for the quilt. They are also a nice way of keeping the couple warm.
