So what exactly is a friendship bracelet? Well, it’s something like a promise ring – friends exchange Friendship
bracelets and then wear them to symbolize their friendship. Though Friendship bracelets are generally used for
platonic friendships, one could use them with romantic overtones as well. Of course this exchange of gifts between
friends is hardly a new custom – people have been exchanging gifts as a symbol of friendship for centuries. But
these bracelets hold far more symbolism because they are not expensive or made from expensive materials (which are
much the same thing, really). Therefore they really stand for the sentiment, for friendship itself, free from any
tawdry display of monetary value or wealth. These days the most popular material used in friendship bracelets is
hemp.
Friendship Bracelets Instructions
To start with you need about 4 lengths of hemp, each of a length near to five feet or so. You can have two strands
of a color, or each strand of a different color – the choice is yours, but take care to choose colors that
complement each other and go well together. Now you begin creating the bracelet by making knots along the entire
length of these strands. These knots could be made either from left to right or the other way around, and you can
experiment with the patters of the knots to create different friendship bracelet patterns.
Hemp Bracelet Patterns
Now it’s quite possible that you may not be able to acquire hemp for your bracelets. Well, there’s no need to
worry, because embroidery thread works just as well. You might also think of buying a thread holder or organizer
when you’re getting started, because this will help to keep all your threads separate. This is important, because
if the different threads get entangled, you’ll find that they become all but useless. The best thing about using
embroidery thread in your friendship bracelet patterns is that it gives you far more options where the style of
your composition is concerned. With the range of styles of embroidery thread that are available, you can create an
almost infinite number of combinations by simply mixing and matching.
Now before you even begin to master the intricacies of patterns, you first need to
master creating the bracelets themselves. Work with cheaper thread or hemp for this, and save your good
material for when your technique is perfect.
Now there are all sorts of techniques for making friendship-bracelets, so I'll go over some of the most basic with
you to start with. You can watch videos on Youtube and we have posted some below as they are really good tutorials
and are good for the beginner and advanced user and get some great tips.
You start by taking three pieces of embroidery floss, perhaps in different colors, or preferably so. Now cut
lengths of each color of floss – these should be three feet long or thereabouts. Hold one end of these together in
one hand, and tie these ends together. Now braid these strands together, the way one would braid hair. Add knots to
lock the strands in place, forming a pattern with the knots.
As you braid the strands and tie them off, the strand on the left side will become the strand on the right side
and back again, as you continue with making the bracelet. Use your common sense and keep things simple. Perfect
this technique before going on to a more complex pattern. Another helpful hint is to buy a simple (accent on the
simple) friendship bracelet in a store and take it apart to see how it's constructed.
Unique Friendship Bracelet Patterns
Now, once you have a basic idea of how to create your jewelry designs, you can try out a slightly more complex
technique. As before, cut lengths that you need and tie off one end together. Now, lets say that you're using three
strands, though actually in this technique you can use as many as you want – start with three, and increase the
number of strands when you feel confident with three. Starting at the right, begin making backward knots, moving to
the left as you do so. When you knot all the strands, move towards the right, again making backward knots. This
should get you to the center. Now just continue this procedure until your bracelet is of the length that you
require.
Jewelry Making
There are all sorts of more complex patterns types that you can learn, of course – just make sure you understand
the basics thoroughly before you follow complex patters. And once you learn the technique of making the knots and
braiding the strings, you can even add 'frills'. You can add a loop at one end of the bracelet that makes it easy
to tie on. You can add beads and other decorations to the threads. You can even add a tassel at the free end, or a
metal icon, or any other sort of decoration. Let your imagination soar, and create bracelets that you friends will
truly be proud to wear.
